Problems At Doc-Film-NetIn the last few days Omnis (our hosts) decided that enough was enough and have finally pulled the plug on our services. The problem they say is that our little site uses too much hard drive space, CPU, and bandwidth. Please don't blame Omnis, they have been very accommodating over the years as Doc-Film-Net has grown and they have provided their services for next to nothing. This is the only way I have been able provide the service as to move Doc-film-net to proper dedicated server would be very expensive given the resources it uses and unfortunately Adsense does not bring in enough to cover such a cost. I have tried charging for a limited number of documentaries (leaving most free) but in truth the number of people who are actually prepared to pay to watch a doc are so few and far between that again this revenue source is not a viable life line. I did try a donation button and in a year it brought in 2.50 euros (and that was paid by my brother :P) so again not a big success. Despite it's financial short comings, I have continued to service Doc-film-net as a labour of love and along with another documentary addict (big thank you Terry) together we have found and put online the best documentaries we could find. This content has attracted many visitors who I know dearly love the service we have been providing and find doc-film-net a fantastic and important resource. However this success is also the problem, with over 10 thousand unique visitors per day watching lots of documentaries = big problems for us. This project was started as a little side project by myself in 2004 one year before Google Video and with NO budget just time and energy. I myself am not financially able to pay the bandwidth bills and unless the site can somehow mange to start paying its way or find a donor who is willing to cover the costs or provide hosting for next to nothing, then this could well be the end for Doc-film-net. I want to dearly thank everyone who has contributed, which includes many film makers who have slaved away to make great little informative and interesting documentaries for the site (some of whom have gone to great risk in doing so), to others who have helped with legal resources to help fend off attacks from over paid lawyers and 'esteemed scientists' who objected vigorously to the Origins of Aids Doc being made available to the general public, to the visitors who have enjoyed the films and let me know in private how much they like the service.
